INTRODUCTION TO UNION PRESCHOOL
Union Preschool, established in 1971, is a non-profit preschool open to all children of the community. It is located in the Union United Methodist Church at Watson and Pernod. The license exempt program is regulated under the State of Missouri Department of Child Health and Safety. The qualified teaching staff is affiliated with the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The program provides a loving, Christian atmosphere and age-appropriate experiences to enable children to grow emotionally, socially, and physically. The faculty strives to create an environment in which a true reverence for life and respect for self and others is evident and modeled.
The facility is set up with learning centers located in ten classrooms and the gym. The centers include three art rooms, a library, a snack room, a gym and a playroom, a language arts area equipped with computers, a music area, a science and math area, and a role playing area. All of the areas are well equipped with a wide variety of materials and age appropriate play equipment. The child's day always begins in the Homeroom with the Homeroom teacher. There are 8-10 children in each class. The teacher plans and facilitates four sessions of activities for the class each day. It is the goal of the teacher to provide a balance of free- play and teacher directed experiences that will stimulate the child's curiosity, interest, imagination and creativity. Hands-on experiences and discovery are essential elements of the curriculum. The preschool curriculum has been further enhanced with the addition of Spanish, writing lab activities and more music activities led by a music teacher.
The summer of 2008 found the preschool fulfilling a dream of adding an outside area for the children. It is a fenced area in the front of the building. It is a Children's Garden in the model of an Outdoor Classroom, similar to that space at Shaw's Garden. We hope to have the space certified in the Spring.
There are pre-school programs for 3, 4 and 5 year olds and a kindergarten. Enrollment can be for 2, 3,4 or 5 sessions per week, depending upon the age of the child. All AM classes are from 8:45-11:15; all PM classes are from 12:15-2:45. The program runs from September through May. Children turning three from September through December may enroll in the January Threes class which begins in January.
